If you need to get a good amount of all the macronutrients and a nice complement of micronutrients for your lawn, Yard Mastery Starter Fertilizer, the "Triple 12" is your go-to for premium elements - formulated specifically for DIYers.
Most of the nitrogen in this blend is ammonium sulphate, a premium N source that brings a really nice stealy-blue-green color to turf and interacts well with the other elements in the overall blend.
12% phosphorous is plenty to push roots in an existing lawn or stimulate rooting in your seed, sod, plug or sprig project.
Rounding out the macros is 12% potassium. Here we have opted for the premium formulation, sulphate of potash, known to have a lower salt index.
As with all Yard Mastery blends, we have also included a nice amount of iron at 3% and a smattering of other micronutrients including boron, copper, manganese, molybdenum and zinc.
Bio-Nite Included
Yard Mastery Starter Fertilizer is also spiked with Bio-Nite. You have heard of Milorganite for sure and this is the same thing (bio-solids) but instead of being sourced in Milwaukee, Bio-Nite comes from South Florida. It brings the smell of success and feeds soil microbes at the same time.
Not Just Starter Fertilizer
So for sure you can apply this when you seed or sod. Apply at 3lbs/1,000 sq ft the day you seed or sod and again at the same rate 2 weeks later.
But it's also great for anyone just looking for "all of the things." If you have a soil test that shows you are low on the big 3 macros, this is an excellent choice.
Spreader Settings
We have our partners at Sunniland blend this Starter Fertilizer for us, and that ensures a consistent product that spreads easily from even cheaper lawn spreaders.
On the bag is included spreader setting for Scotts, Earthway and the Echo RB60 spreader as well as Lesco. The recommended application rate of 3lbs/1,000 sq ft is plenty to give you the results you are looking for without pushing a ton of top growth.
All Grass Types
Yard Mastery Starter Fertilizer can be used on any and all grass types. Apply in spring to get your lawn moving or in summer for a lower N and higher P and K blend that won't drive too much top growth. Also makes an excellent winterizer.
It is recommended you get a soil test if you plan to use this product often. in Some cases you may not need all the phosphorous. Also, some municipalities have regulations against the use of Phosphorous unless you have a soil test confirming you need it. Others allow phosphorous only when seeding or sodding so be sure to check with your local county extension office for an update on your local rules and regulations.
